Kithnos is one of the lesser-known Cycladic destinations, yet it brims with architectural charm and a “less is more” attitude that makes it an ideal destination when you just want to get away from it all. Messaria or Chora if you wish, the capital of the island, is built on mountainous slopes offering a dry yet impressive scenery. This doesn’t mean it lacks the usual Cycladic architectural style, the whitewashed houses and the sense of escapism they create. If you are in the mood for some culture, then visit the archaeological site of Maroulas. Thermal springs called Loutra are a great way to pamper yourself a bit. As for beaches, in Kithnos you can find some knockout shores filled with tamarisks for natural shade. Try Agios Dimitrios, Agios Sostis, Apokrousi, Episkopi and Kalo Livadi. Then, once you’ve stirred your appetite, head to Ostria and Archipelagos for some fresh fish and local dishes like sfougato.
