Once believed to be the home of the Nymphs, Cephalonia (Kefalonia) is a wondrous, mystical island, surrounded by verdant greenery and an omnipresent black mountain named Enos. The two largest towns, namely Argostoli and Lixouri, have been somewhat deprived of their traditional architectural beauty due to earthquakes, yet remain worthy of a visit. When in Argostoli, the Lithostroto main street and the cobblestone promenade are perfect for a stroll. For charm aplenty set sail towards Fiskardo, an unspoiled yet cosmopolitan port at the northwest tip of the island and Assos a heavenly pretty village, with colorful houses draped in bougainvillea. Lake Melissani is a natural wonder one must see when in Cephalonia. Poseidon’s daughters known as Nymphs were believed to inhabit the translucent waters of the lake that is located twenty meters below the earth’s surface. Cephalonia boasts some jaw-dropping beaches like Myrtos, Petanoi, Makris Gialos, Zola and Antisamos the beach that big screen fans fell in love with as the backdrop of Captain Corelli’s mandolin. When all the swimming makes you hungry seek the fragrant and crisp Robola wine, the local white cheese that arguably beats feta and the ultimate local dish, the finger-licking good meat pie known as kreatopita. Taverna Vasso at Fiskardo makes a mean one. Extra tip: Don’t forget to engage with the locals. Cephalonians are spirited people with a soft spot for music. You never know when a fiesta is about to begin.
